[H] Homeopathy in the News

In the wake of communicable disease outbreak in the city, the
Corporation along with the State Homeopathic Department launched
a three-day-long Free Homeopathy Medical Camp in the city on
Tuesday. During the camp, the homeopathic drugs against jaundice
will be distributed in all the divisions of the Corporation.

Joe Schwarcz: A whole lot of sugar helps this pill go down

I have absolutely no desire to limit anyone's freedom of choice
when it comes to choosing health care products, or any company's
right to sell items that the public wants to buy, as long as
these are safe. But I do have a desire to ensure that whatever
choice consumers make is based on scientifically informed
opinion. In the case of homeopathy, misinformation can have
consequences ranging from a needless waste of money to forgoing
more effective treatments. As an educator, I am also troubled by
the promotion of a practice that is based on principles that
cannot be supported by the established laws of chemistry,
biology or physics. Hopefully, the publicity the current lawsuit
will generate should help people understand the true nature of
homeopathy.

Homeopathy isn't a placebo, say experts

Homeopathy is effective in treating many serious diseases,
including certain kinds of cancer, and costs just one-fifth of
allopathic medication, say experts in the field of homeopathy.
It isn't a placebo like certain doctors claim, say experts.

Hoardings dotting the city claim ‘miraculous' cure for a range
of ailments through homoeopathy. From stopping hair fall to
treating obesity and from bringing in hormonal balance to curing
infertility, mushrooming clinics promise an answer to all. But
main stream doctors scoff at these claims and maintain that the
very system of homoeopathy is a ‘scientific hoax'. And caught
between claims and counter claims, patients are a confused lot
these days.

Is Combination of Both Homoeopathy and Allopathy A Good Advice?

Allopathy is undoubtedly the best treatment that can give relief
to a patient in an emergency situation as the medicines cure the
ailment by killing the invading pathogen but experts advise that
homoeopathy is a treatment that prepares the body to fight the
pathogens itself.

Is homeopathy the medicine of the future?

Conventional doctors scoff at homeopathy and maintain that the
very system is a farce. According to Dr Krishna, General
Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Homeopathy Association there needs
to be informed debate about homeopathy to clear the doubts
people have about it. "People have many misconceptions about
homeopathy and this is causing a lot of confusion. There has to
be an informed debate about homeopathy to help people in taking
a better decision," K. Gopala Krishna, General Secretary of
Andhra Pradesh Homeopathy Association, said.

Homeopaths on homeopathy

In celebration of World Homeopathy Awareness Week, I've decided
to hand my blog over to leading homeopaths and allow them to
have their say. After all, the more people know about
homeopathy, the better; and who better to tell them than
homeopaths, in their own words

Will lawsuits spell the end of homeopathy?

Last week, the firm, in collaboration with Centre for Inquiry
CFI Canada, announced a $30-million lawsuit against Shoppers
Drug Mart and Boiron Inc., makers of a curious little product
called Oscillococcinum. I wrote about Oscillococcinum many years
ago. At the time, the little capsules were flying off the
shelves, mostly in Europe, and Boiron was raking in hundreds of
millions of dollars a year. Boiron's profits have continued to
soar.

Method for appraising model validity of randomised controlled trials of homeopathic treatment

A method for assessing the model validity of randomised
controlled trials of homeopathy is needed. To date, only
conventional standards for assessing intrinsic bias internal
validity of trials have been invoked, with little recognition of
the special characteristics of homeopathy.

CEASE and desist subjecting autistic children to homeopathy

If there's anything that deserves--nay, begs for!--a heapin'
helpin' of not-so-Respectful Insolence, it's homeopathy and
homeopaths. And that's just what something known as CEASE
Therapy is going to get. I first found out about CEASE Therapy
from a news article sent to me by a reader. This article
describes an upcoming event in May listed on the Irish Society
of Homeopaths website called Treating Autism And The CEASE
Method.

A homeopath lectures scientists about anecdotal evidence

No wonder it's no surprise that it was a homeopath named Gina
Tyler who wrote a piece called Anecdotal Evidence: The Basis of
All Knowledge. Yes, in this piece, Tyler argues that anecdotes
trump science, so much so that doctors use anecdotes themselves.
The post is a mixture of straw men and distortions, all mixed in
with a profound misunderstanding of how doctors think and
operate.
